(Overview)

A point-of-sale platform developed for retail and hospitality businesses in Croatia, enabling merchants to manage multiple branches under a unified configuration system.

Architected with a microservices approach to isolate high-frequency register transactions from administrative reporting and government-related fiscal compliance workflows.

Project Overview

The platform was engineered to serve retail and commercial businesses operating across one or more physical branches in Croatia. Each business required the flexibility to configure their own inventory rules, assign registers to branches, and execute point-of-sale transactions reliably during daily operations.

Problem & Operational Need

Managing multi-branch retail operations requires consistent pricing and inventory coordination without making branch checkouts vulnerable to wide-area network lags. In addition, businesses in Croatia must comply with fiscalization protocols for invoicing transactions.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS & SPECIFICATIONS
  • Multi-branch businesses needed centralized administrative management with decentralized register operations.
  • Cashier checkout workflows required low latency and resilience during high-volume customer queues.
  • Fiscalization communications had to be processed reliably alongside standard checkout receipts.

Solution & Key Capabilities

The system was structured across independent services that split checkout flows, branch configuration, and fiscalization reporting into cohesive functional areas.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS & SPECIFICATIONS
  • Multi-business & branch management: Merchants can configure business identities, create branch profiles, and manage register assignments.
  • POS checkout workflows: Barcode scanning, cart calculation, cash and card tender processing, and shift closeouts.
  • Fiscal compliance integration: Implemented specialized communication services that generate and submit fiscal invoice payloads in compliance with Croatian regulatory rules.
  • Catalog and inventory sync: Branch-level inventory adjustments and price rule propagation.

My Role & Technical Contribution

As a full-stack engineer on the platform, I contributed to the Next.js cashier interface, Express backend service endpoints, and data validation layers that ensure transaction integrity between branches.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS & SPECIFICATIONS
  • Built high-contrast, keyboard-optimized checkout screens in Next.js for rapid cashier item entry.
  • Authored Node.js and Express REST endpoints handling branch inventory queries and register sessions.
  • Integrated structured payload builders for fiscal invoice submissions and response verifications.

Important Engineering Decisions

To safeguard checkout responsiveness, the fiscalization communication pipeline was isolated from the primary cashier checkout thread. Transactions are recorded locally and acknowledged immediately, while fiscalization dispatches execute via dedicated workers with retry queues.
